Baku Eyes Closer Ties with BRICS for a Multipolar World
On October 22, Rahman Mustafayev, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Moscow, emphasized that strengthening cooperation with BRICS aligns with Azerbaijan's national interests.
Mustafayev highlighted that this collaboration "organically fits" into Baku's long-standing efforts to establish a fair global order and create equal opportunities for all nations. He noted, "On one hand, Azerbaijan advocates for increasing the authority of the UN, its role, and effectiveness as a universal organization designed to play a central coordinating role in international relations. On the other hand, it shares the ideology of a multipolar world, forming a world order free from double standards and excluding the creation of dividing lines."
The ambassador underscored the significance of cooperation with BRICS, an influential organization that represents nearly 35% of the Earth's landmass, 45% of the global population, 30% of the world's GDP, over 40% of global oil production, and 70% of the world's reserves of rare earth minerals, essential for industrial development.
Mustafayev also pointed out that BRICS is focused on the global South, a region where Azerbaijan traditionally holds a significant and often leading role. "Azerbaijan's policy harmoniously fits into the ideology and practice of BRICS, supporting the principles of multipolarity and enhancing the role of developing countries in global politics and economics," he added.
The ambassador further noted that Azerbaijan’s interest in deepening cooperation with BRICS is a natural continuation of its balanced approach to world politics and international cooperation. This strategy is particularly important in the current phase of international relations, as President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev mentioned in his speech to the parliament on September 23, stating that the security architecture established after World War II has been nearly completely dismantled.
Azerbaijan Seeks BRICS Support for a Fairer Global Order, Says Presidential Advisor
On October 22, Hikmet Hajiyev, the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, stated that BRICS plays a significant role in enhancing global governance and fostering a more equitable world order.
Hajiyev emphasized that since its inception, BRICS has promoted pluralism and the democratization of the international relations system. "We believe that BRICS countries, being committed to international law, principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, support mutually beneficial relations between states and prevent the monopolization of the political agenda by only one group of countries," he said. He added that these principles improve global governance and develop the international order more equitably.
The assistant to the president also discussed the organization's potential, asserting that member states can leverage their advantages. He noted that Azerbaijan's desire to join BRICS would be a logical extension of the country's active independent foreign policy. "Azerbaijan can bring additional dynamics to BRICS, and membership in the organization will continue the country's positive relations with current participants on a multilateral platform," Hajiyev concluded.
