Bayramov Discusses Progress in Peace Talks, India-Pakistan Conflict, and Plane Crash Investigation

On May 10, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that while contacts with Armenia regarding the peace process were ongoing across several areas, no significant progress had been observed. He emphasized Baku’s expectations concerning territorial claims, minefield data, and regional connectivity projects.
During his remarks, Bayramov noted that although contacts with Armenia on the peace process continued in various directions, Yerevan had yet to take meaningful steps toward normalization. He stressed that Azerbaijan expected Armenia to formally renounce its territorial claims and support the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group structure, adding, “We are monitoring these processes. There are contacts, but no serious steps have been observed yet.”
The foreign minister recalled that Armenia first provided minefield maps in June 2021, followed by subsequent submissions, though he criticized their poor accuracy, stating that “their accuracy is less than 25%.” Since November 2020, he reported, approximately 400 mine-related incidents had occurred in the liberated territories, resulting in nearly 70 deaths, while Armenia had yet to provide data for over half of the affected areas.
Bayramov also noted that initial contacts on border delimitation between Azerbaijan and Armenia had taken place, and efforts in this area would continue. Furthermore, he reiterated Baku’s expectation for Yerevan to fulfill its obligations to reopen transport and communication routes between Nakhchivan and Azerbaijan’s western regions.
Turning to international affairs, Bayramov stressed that Azerbaijan urged Pakistan and India to resolve their disputes through political and diplomatic channels, asserting that Baku’s stance was grounded in international law. He stated, “Our position is that one country was striking the territory of another state. We call on both sides to find a solution through political means.”
Lastly, Bayramov addressed the ongoing investigation into the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane crash in Aktau, confirming that contacts with Russian authorities continued, and they had reported that their investigation was still in progress.
