Belarus Reconsiders Its Stance on South Ossetia and Abkhazia Amid International Shifts

On March 29, Vadim Gigin, a member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus and director of the National Library of Belarus, emphasized the necessity of analyzing the current format of relations between the Union State and [the separatist] South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

He acknowledged the historically friendly ties between the Belarusian, Ossetian, and Abkhazian peoples. Gigin highlighted Georgia's evolving policy, noting both positive and negative changes that should be closely examined and considered in decision-making processes. He emphasized the need to analyze the existing format of relations between the Union State and the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, evaluate cooperation formats, and consider the authorities' positions in those regions.

Regarding the integration of [the separatist] South Ossetia and Abkhazia with the Union State, Gigin emphasized the significance of economic and domestic political realities. He cautioned that the path Belarus and Russia took over a quarter of a century cannot be replicated in a short period. Gigin stressed the importance of approving a plan and program, signing documents, and aligning national legislation with integration efforts. He expressed Belarus's readiness to share its experience but underscored the necessity of concerted efforts from the involved states.
