Bidzina Ivanishvili Criticizes Opposition and Urges Voters to Support His Party; Defends Anti-LGBT Law
On October 21, Bidzina Ivanishvili, Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, spoke with journalist Magda Anikashvili.
He reflected on his political journey, noting that while he was more active in 2012, today's election holds greater importance. Ivanishvili criticized the United National Movement (UNM), stating that the situation was "dangerous" and advocating for the UNM's outlawing. He urged citizens to vote for GD, promising a future with a "real" opposition.
Ivanishvili discussed LGBT propaganda and defended the anti-LGBT law, stating it aimed to protect family values. While acknowledging the LGBT community as "normal people," he condemned the promotion of LGBT rights, equating it with a Western liberal ideology aimed at destabilizing traditional values.
He justified the recent push to ban the UNM due to an ongoing trial at The Hague and a lack of resources in previous years. Ivanishvili claimed the GD has become "more experienced" and "aggressive" toward the opposition, partly due to events surrounding the Ukraine war. He described attempts to drag Georgia into war against Russia and accused both UNM and other opposition forces of being foreign proxies.
Commenting on US Ambassador Robin Dunnigan's statement about his financial interests, Ivanishvili claimed that his foreign assets were frozen, limiting his access to funds. He connected this to his refusal to meet with US representatives, citing "personal complexes" and fears of appearing motivated by financial interests rather than national welfare.
