On March 25, Charles Michel, the President of the Council of the European Union, discussed the situation in the region by telephone separately with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan.

According to the information of the Press Service of the Armenian Prime Minister, during the conversation with Prime Minister Pashinyan, they touched upon the ongoing crisis as a result of the illegal closing of the Lachin Corridor of Azerbaijan. Opinions were exchanged on the issues of regulating Armenia-Azerbaijani relations, the peace agreement, and the restoration of the operation of regional communications. "The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia expressed his concern about Azerbaijan's recently increasing aggressive rhetoric and provocative actions that hinder efforts to achieve stability and peace," it added.

The President of the European Council confirmed that the EU is ready to promote dialogue and peace in the region. "President Michel expressed concern about the ongoing crisis around the Lachin Corridor, the recent casualties and the sharp escalation of tensions on the ground, as well as the negative rhetoric," the Council of the European Union said in a press release. He called on his colleagues to seek compromise solutions and refrain from any actions that could lead to escalation.

According to the Press Service of the President of Azerbaijan, Charles Michel said that the European Union would continue its efforts to ensure lasting peace and security in the region.

"The President of the Council of the European Union touched on the issues surrounding the Lachin-Khankendi road of Azerbaijan and expressed his concern about the incidents that took place on the state border of Armenia and Azerbaijan in recent days," the information added.

President Ilham Aliyev once again emphasized that Azerbaijan supports the Brussels process. Touching on the situation around the Lachin-Khankendi road, the President of Azerbaijan noted that the claims put forward by Armenia regarding the supposed closure of this road are entirely false, "From December 12, 2022, until today, about 5,000 vehicles belonging to the Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross, people in need of medical assistance and those accompanying them have passed through this road." Ilham Aliyev said that the process of transporting weapons and personnel by Armenia to the territories of Azerbaijan, where the Russian peacekeeping forces are temporarily stationed, is still being carried out. The information stated that the President of Azerbaijan drew attention to the Armenian leadership's dangerous and escalating official statements.

As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, on the evening of May 25, it was announced that the Azerbaijani army had made advances in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to a statement from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan had taken control of the ground roads that were allegedly used for the transfer of arms, ammunition, and personnel by Armenia to Karabakh.
