Devastating Flood Hits Northern Armenia

The heavy rain on the night of May 26 caused flooding along the Debed and Tashir rivers, inundating residential houses in Armenia’s Northern Alaverdi, Tashir cities, and neighboring villages. Additionally, the flooding destroyed the interstate road and damaged various infrastructures in the affected areas.

In response, The Armenian government set up a task force to cope with the natural disaster uncommon for the mountainous country. It said Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan rushed to the flooded areas in the afternoon to inspect rescue efforts and the damage. 

Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, confirmed that two individuals lost their lives due to the floods. The Ministry of Interior later confirmed that the number of victims from the flooding has risen to three people at the moment, with also two people missing. Gnel Sanosyan highlighted that aside from the casualties and missing individuals, there are numerous issues with other critical infrastructures, notably power grids, gas pipelines, and drinking water systems. He emphasized that some of these problems cannot be fully assessed and inventoried at the moment due to the ongoing emergency caused by the floods. 

As of May 26, three people had died as a result of the floodwaters and another was reported missing. 

The incident also compelled authorities to close Armenia’s primary border crossing with Georgia and suspend rail service between the two countries.
