Emmanuel Macron Disagrees with Hardliners on Karabakh Issue

French President Emmanuel Macron said a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia is necessary. He noted that the issue is complex, and he disagrees with the views of the hardliners.

"We have always supported the sovereignty of peoples. The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh is complex, including the sovereignty of peoples. I cannot agree with what the hardliners say about this. France has publicly condemned the 2020 war and organized several humanitarian operations. Today, we are doing everything we can to reach an agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan that brings lasting peace and protects peoples and cultures. Such a peace agreement is necessary, but it must comply with the norms of international law," the French president stressed.

In the continuation of the interview, the journalist said international experts in Karabakh currently record a genocide process. Macron did not consider the use of this term acceptable. "I would not use this term so hastily. There is an unacceptable humanitarian situation due to the closure of the Lachin Corridor. France's role is to maintain pressure on the delivery of humanitarian aid, and we continue to make every effort to achieve this. In particular, we have continued all the necessary initiatives to ensure the delivery of food and medicine and free access to Nagorno-Karabakh," Macron said.
