EU Discusses Saakashvili with Georgian Government

On February 27, Pawel Herczynski, the Ambassador of the European Union in Georgia, said that he and the Ambassador of Sweden handed over the official EU demarche to the Minister of Justice of Georgia, which concerns Mikheil Saakashvili, the former President of Georgia.

According to the diplomat, all 27 member states of the European Union agreed to this demarche in Brussels. "Together with the ambassador of Sweden, representing the country holding the presidency of the European Union, we delivered an official demarche to the Minister of Justice. Demarche refers to the former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. We are very concerned about the reports of his deteriorating health. What is very important is that all 27 member states of the European Union agree to this demarche," said the EU Ambassador.

"We had a very open and honest conversation with the Minister of Justice. We presented the position of the European Union, which was agreed upon by 27 member states. The Minister of Justice provided information about what the Georgian government is doing to protect the rights of the former President, Mikheil Saakashvili, as an accused and a prisoner," Herczynski added.

Reaction from politicians

On February 28, Archil Talakvadze, the Deputy Chairman of Parliament, said: "Unfortunately, I don't remember any demarche when prisoners were really tortured, when during Saakashvili's presidency, prisoners were really dying due to health care and inhuman treatment."

"It is necessary to meet with the ambassadors and discuss with them the arguments that actually exist regarding prisoner Saakashvili," he added. Regarding transferring Mikheil Saakashvili abroad for medical treatment, according to Archil Talakvadze, the main problem today is feeding Mikheil Saakashvili, not his release from prison.

On the same day, Rati Bregadze, the Minister of Justice of Georgia, stated that at a meeting with the Ambassadors of the European Union and Sweden in Georgia, there was no discussion about the transfer of the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, abroad.

"Three untrue pieces of information were spread in a short period. There was no discussion of transfer abroad at today's meeting, especially to any specific country. I respect the freedom of the media, however, the public should be properly informed," the minister said.

Additionally, Mikheil Saakashvili underlined: "Salome Zourabichvili should use her position and let the whole world know that in the conditions of complete isolation of Georgia, its complete conquest and occupation is being prepared - now is not the time to think about grievances at all, and in this great war, we should use all opportunities to fight."

"It is clear that along with the defeat in Ukraine, Moscow intends to openly seize power in Tbilisi shortly and will make the intimidated proxies agree to all the terms," he added. According to Saakashvili, all political groups should unite against the Russian coup and hold immediate consultations with the country's President, Salome Zourabichvili.

"In my opinion, all political groups should unite against the Russian coup and also hold immediate consultations with the President. It is quite clear that parallel to the failure in Ukraine, after failing in Moldova, now Moscow will openly seize power in Tbilisi shortly and make the intimidated proxies agree to all the terms. Salome Zourabichvili should use her position and make the whole world know that in the conditions of complete isolation of Georgia, its complete conquest and occupation is being prepared," the official stated.

"The President says that there is no true peace without freedom, and we are being enslaved by the fear of war. Therefore, resistance is the duty of every real Georgian, starting from the current and former presidents. We don't have any people to lose in this fight," Mikheil Saakashvili added.
