EU Ministers Issue Joint Statement on Georgian Elections, Urging Transparency and Electoral Integrity

| News, Politics, Georgia

In a joint statement, a coalition of European Union ministers expressed "deep concern" regarding recent elections in Georgia, citing reports from international observers that highlighted serious violations during both the campaign and election day. The ministers collectively condemned any breaches of international norms for free and fair elections and called for a thorough, impartial investigation into complaints, as well as immediate corrective actions.

The statement emphasized EU solidarity with the Georgian people during this tense period, stressing the importance of peaceful protests and cautioning the government to ensure a restrained response. The ministers underscored that violations of electoral integrity run counter to the standards expected of an EU candidate country, calling such practices "a betrayal of the Georgian people’s legitimate European aspirations." Upholding democratic principles, including free and fair elections and the rule of law, is critical to Georgia’s progress on its EU path, they affirmed.

The EU ministers also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for what they termed a “premature” visit to Georgia, clarifying that Orbán does not represent the EU in this matter. The statement’s signatories include key ministers for European and foreign affairs from Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden, along with representation from other EU states.

This unified response from EU leadership signals an increased commitment to supporting democratic integrity in Georgia while cautioning that adherence to democratic standards is essential for Georgia’s continued European integration.
