EU, NATO Welcome US-Mediated Negotiations Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar welcomed the negotiations between the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers held in the United States.

“Encouraging news from Washington. EU welcomes the sustained engagement from the Armenian and Azerbaijani FMs in 4 days of negotiations,” he tweeted.

“Progress can only be made through dialogue. We continue to stand with Armenia and Azerbaijan and work with our partners in the quest for sustained peace,” Klaar added.

Javier Colomina, the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, also expressed his support and welcomed the talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan hosted by the United States this week.

“Good to hear that tangible progress towards a durable peace agreement was made in Washington after four days of constructive engagement between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Colomina said in a tweet on May 6.

Colomina also emphasized that negotiations and dialogue are the only way forward, and NATO supports the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that discussions are underway regarding a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Moscow next week.

“Certain plans are now being discussed. A relevant announcement will be made as soon as the discussion is concluded. It's early to talk about it,” the spokesman said.
