European Commission Raises Concerns About Media Freedom in Azerbaijan
On January 23, in response to VOA's inquiry regarding the recent arrests of several journalists in Azerbaijan, Peter Stano, the Chief Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission, stated: "Human rights and respect for the rule of law form the basis of the European Union's relations with Azerbaijan."
Stano highlighted that the European Union has consistently conveyed its apprehensions about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan to its Azerbaijani counterparts. He emphasized that freedom of expression and independent media are universal values applicable worldwide.
Expressing concern about the state of human rights in Azerbaijan, particularly in relation to independent media, Stano mentioned that the EU has raised these concerns with Azerbaijani officials on multiple occasions. Referring to the EU's last statement on December 21, 2023, he underscored the union's commitment to urging Azerbaijan to fulfill its domestic and international obligations concerning media freedom and the human rights of its citizens.
Stano emphasized that the European Union's relations with Azerbaijan are built on a foundation of respect for human rights and the rule of law. He asserted that the EU believes fundamental rights, including a fair trial and due process of law, are essential for stability and prosperity.
Consequently, Stano affirmed that the EU will continue to engage in various forums, including the annual EU-Azerbaijan Human Rights Dialogue, to express concerns about human rights events in Azerbaijan.
