France Criticizes Russia's Lack of Support for Armenia
During an interview on the evening of April 3, Olivier Decotigny, the French Ambassador to Yerevan, remarked on the lack of support from Armenia's official ally, Russia, during two separate clashes in 2021 and 2022.
He emphasized that Russia "did not come to the republic's aid" despite being a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Decotigny pointedly stated, "If someone is not contributing to Armenia's security, it is Russia."
He also addressed accusations from Russia that European capitals, including Paris, induced Armenia to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan following the conflict in 2020. The French diplomat asserted, "The guarantor of the ceasefire regime - Russia - did not fulfill its role when it was violated by Azerbaijan during the 44-day war. The forces tasked with ensuring the agreement's implementation in Nagorno-Karabakh were Russian."
Moreover, Decotigny highlighted France's commitment to Armenia's defense by initiating cooperation in the military sphere over recent months. When questioned about potential aggression from Azerbaijan, he clarified that while he represents France, he does not speak on behalf of Europe or the United States. Nonetheless, France stands ready to assist Armenia in protecting its people, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. Decotigny stressed the importance of proactive support, stating, "We have started cooperation in the military sphere with Armenia, which concerns the supply of equipment."
