Georgia Pushes for Clarity in NATO Accession Process During Brussels Visit

| News, Security, Georgia

A high-level Georgian delegation visited Brussels for negotiations on Georgia's NATO accession process. Within the framework of the visit, a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission was held with the participation of the Speaker of the Parliament, and high-level bilateral meetings are also planned in NATO. The Georgian delegation consisted of the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee, Irakli Beraia and Member of Parliament Ketevan Turazashvili.

According to Shalva Papuashvili, Georgia has done everything and demonstrated with all parameters that it deserves NATO membership.

"Georgia applied for NATO membership 20 years ago, and 15 years ago, NATO members said in Bucharest that Georgia would become a NATO member state. During these 20 years, especially during the 15 years since we received confirmation of future membership, Georgia has done a lot to bring institutions and systems into line with NATO. We show that we don't want to be just a user of the security system, but we want to be a contributor. That is why we participated and are participating in NATO international missions. Georgia has done everything, demonstrated by all parameters that Georgia is ready and deserves NATO membership… As in the case of the European Union and the case of NATO, at least it should be clear what the schedule is and what the criteria are. The Georgian people, who contributed so much to international security and made sacrifices for international security, should hear clear answers and expectations from NATO," said Papuashvili.

Our main topic of conversation with our NATO partners is the Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia and the country's accession to NATO," Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Beraia said about this during his visit to Brussels.

As Beraia noted, Georgia is ready for NATO membership; the country deserves NATO membership. "The most important thing that the parliamentary delegation came to Brussels to discuss is Georgia's accession to NATO and the need to make a decision. Especially considering the current geopolitical situation. Our delegation will be vocal in telling the Alliance member states that we expect matching steps from our partners. Georgia is ready for NATO membership; the country deserves NATO membership. The ball is in Alliance's court. We hope a fair decision will be made within a reasonable time," noted Beraia.

Nikokoz Samkharadze argued, "Georgia is waiting for practical steps from NATO on the way to membership. We tell everyone we are ready for NATO membership, which is also our constitutional task. Accordingly, we demand clear proposals, a clear path and route on how Georgia can become a member of NATO".
