Georgian Dream Accuses Saakashvili Anti-Georgia Sanctions Lobbying

| News, Politics, Georgia

Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream, said that the data released by the US Department of Justice on the payment by the family of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili for the services of American lobbying companies had revealed what the radical opposition in Georgia had been hiding.

Kobakhidze added, "Thanks to the US Foreign Agents Act [FARA], Georgian society has once again seen the true face of the United National Movement founded by Saakashvili." He said, "As for FARA, it was directly revealed that representatives of the National Movement were paying money for the imposition of sanctions against Georgia." According to Kobakhidze, documents published on the US Department of Justice website confirmed that the National Movement is a party of treason."

"This once again shows that the National Movement is a party of both war and betrayal, they are direct traitors and agents. You know that the 'Russian law' is in force in the United States, this is the FARA law, and thanks to this law for what else once the face of the National Movement was exposed," the official said.

"On July 26, the United States, in Tbilisi and Washington, raised our concerns with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the disinformation carried by some media outlets and amplified by political figures in recent days regarding the work of the US Embassy and our employees. "As we have made clear, no one at the US Embassy in Tbilisi has engaged in lobbying on behalf of former President Saakashvili or helped to schedule any meetings for his lobbyists. Malicious stories alleging or implying that Embassy employees received money from lobbying firms are categorically false and irresponsible," the report added.

Notably, it is alleged that the Saakashvili family paid thousands of dollars to American companies to get the ex-president released from prison. This became known from the report of the US Department of Justice, which published data on the activities of Akerman and GP International for six months. The companies were paid $96,000 for their lobbying activities. Lobbyists bought articles about Saakashvili's 'terrible condition' in influential Western media, disseminated relevant information among US and UK officials, provided contacts with Ukrainian politicians to advance their position in the US and Great Britain, prepared draft resolutions on Saakashvili for the European Parliament, urged US senators and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to impose sanctions against Georgia, forced Polish doctors to visit Saakashvili, tried to influence Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili during her visit to New York to pardon Saakashvili.
