Georgian Dream Chairman Dismisses Opposition's Electoral Prospects, Foresees EU Accession
On December 22, Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said everyone understands that the radical opposition will heavily lose elections.
"The talk that they will once again try to develop the same scenario they developed after the 2020 parliamentary elections is logical. They have no other way or choice. This is not their choice. They have no resources to regain power either through elections or streets. Ultimately, both elections and streets need the same resource, which is the support of people. When people don't support you, naturally, you won't be able to win elections or organize a revolution. Therefore, this attempt is doomed to fiasco. As for using the topic of opening negotiations for these purposes, theoretically, anything is possible," Kobakhidze added.
In addition, he responded to the possible pardon of Lazare Grigoriadis by President Salome Zourabichvili. He noted that if the President takes this decision, it will be proof that she directly follows the agenda of the collective United National Movement. "Salome Zourabichvili has done such things in the recent period that no one will be surprised by her. She is one component of the radical position, the collective National Movement. Therefore, she can take any step," the official noted.
Moreover, Kobakhidze is sure that Georgia will be able to join the European Union earlier than Ukraine and Moldova, even though it received the candidate status later. Kobakhidze added that Georgia is ahead of Ukraine and Moldova in many directions, including democracy and human rights.
"If not in 2024, it will happen in 2025, although we think this decision should be made in 2024. Even last year, we deserved the opening of negotiations, not to mention candidate status. Although it is a political issue, we cannot investigate it deeply. We believe that we deserved the opening of negotiations last year, and we deserve it even more in December 2024. We hope that a fair decision will be made," he noted.
Furthermore, according to Kobakhidze, the representatives of the party For Georgia and the United National Movement have formed a coalition in 4 municipalities, which is why their alliance cannot be hidden. "They think that if they separate from each other in terms of PR, it will benefit the political chances of both parties, which makes me smile for one simple reason. These two parties have created a coalition in 4 municipalities. If the public sees this, what PR tricks may they use to cover it up? They have created a coalition in 4 municipalities. They have officially created an alliance in 4 municipalities, under such conditions, of course, their alliance cannot be covered or hidden," Kobakhidze noted.
Kobakhidze also responded to Mikheil Saakashvili's initiative to create a Super Committee. "Saakashvili again and again tries to pretend that he is suffering from dementia. This is not serious, of course," he said.
Irakli Kobakhidze responded to the request for the transfer of Mikheil Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, from the Vivamedi clinic to the penal institution, on which the Georgian Dream Chairman said that the relevant agencies should decide on this issue. "I cannot give you an answer to this question, it is a matter for the relevant agencies. I think that Saakashvili has too much comfort. He does not objectively need to be in the hospital. He does not have any relevant disease. This is my assessment. Naturally, relevant agencies make decisions on this topic. Therefore, I do not have the competence to answer this question," Kobakhidze emphasized.
