Georgian Foreign Minister Holds High-Level Meetings with EU Officials in Brussels
Meeting with the Director General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations
As part of his visit to Brussels on September 25, Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili held a meeting with Gert Jan Koopman, Director General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR), the press office of the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.
Discussions focused on the process of Georgia's accession to the European Union, in particular on the implementation of the 12 recommendations of the European Commission, in particular on the priorities identified during the visit of the High Representative Joseph Borrell and the Director General of DG NEAR, Gert Jan Koopman, to Georgia.
The Minister provided the Director General with detailed information on the recent steps taken to implement the recommendations, both in terms of legislative and institutional reforms. Ilia Darchiashvili expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the European Union's high-level representatives to Georgia as a further demonstration of the European Union's support for Georgia.
The Director General positively assessed Georgia's efforts to meet the priorities. The sides expressed the hope that these efforts would be reflected in the European Commission's report.
The sides agreed to continue close cooperation in exchanging information and assessments on the implementation of the 12 priorities.
Meeting with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs
On September 26, Ilia Darchiashvili met with Ilva Johansson, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs.
The Minister confirmed the Georgian Government's commitment to the full implementation of the priorities set by the European Commission and hoped that the European Commission would give due recognition to Georgia's efforts in this regard.
Meeting with the European Commission on Values and Transparency
On the same day, the Georgian Foreign Minister met with Vera Yurova, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency.
"The main topic of the meeting was the process of Georgia's accession to the European Union. The Minister informed Vera Yurova about Georgia's progress in implementing the European Commission's recommendations and expressed the hope that Georgia's reforms will be duly appreciated and reflected in the relevant decision on granting the country candidate status," the report said.
Discussions focused on Georgia's efforts in the field of rule of law and reaffirmed Georgia's commitment to European values and commitments as it moves towards integration with the European Union.
Meeting with the European Commissioner for Energy
On September 26, Ilia Darchiashvili met with Kadri Simson, the European Commissioner for Energy.
Special attention was paid to the importance of granting Georgia the status of a candidate country. The sides expressed the hope that the progress made by the country on the path of European integration will be duly reflected in the report of the European Commission. The sides highly appreciated the EU-Georgia energy cooperation and emphasized the growing role of Georgia in the process of ensuring the energy security of Europe and expressed the hope that the energy cooperation will be further deepened and raised to the strategic level in the near future, for which both sides are ready.
Meeting with the European Union Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement
On the same day, the Georgian Foreign Minister held a meeting with the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Mr. Olivér Várhelyi.
The Minister informed the European Commissioner about the work done by Georgia in order to fulfill the priorities set during the visit of the High Representative, Joseph Borell, and reiterated that the country will ensure further progress in this direction.
The European Commissioner welcomed the efforts made by the Georgian side, in particular the recent steps taken to implement the recommendations, and expressed his readiness to continue close coordination with the Georgian Government.
