Georgian Opposition Parties Unite Following President's Call for 'Positive Third Center'

| News, Politics, Georgia

At a special briefing on September 16, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili announced the forthcoming coalition between two opposition groups: Lelo’s "Strong Georgia" and former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s "For Georgia." She invited both parties to the Orbeliani Presidential Palace on September 17 to formally finalize the coalition.

Zourabichvili stated that a positive third center must be established to provide opposition-leaning and undecided voters with a clearer and easier choice. She identified Strong Georgia - a coalition consisting of Lelo, Ana Dolidze’s For People and Citizens political parties, and the Freedom Square movement - and Giorgi Gakharia’s For Georgia party as the key players in this effort.

The president emphasized that she had consulted with all the involved forces and saw these two as capable of creating the momentum needed for "full mobilization" within society. Zourabichvili welcomed the willingness of both groups to unite, stressing that she knew they were prepared to move forward together.

Inviting both parties to the Orbeliani Palace on September 17, she urged them to "immediately carry out the final step of the negotiations." Zourabichvili concluded by stating, "I am sure that this is exactly what society expects from you."
