Georgian PM and German Chancellor Discuss EU Integration and Regional Security

On April 12, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze embarked on an official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, commencing with an official welcome ceremony at the Federal Chancellery. 

Hosted by Olaf Scholz, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Kobakhidze engaged in a one-on-one meeting followed by extended negotiations involving government members from both nations.

At the interface meeting, the high level of political dialogue and positive trajectory of bilateral relations were emphasized. Kobakhidze expressed gratitude for Germany's steadfast support of Georgia's EU integration path and highlighted the significance of Georgia's status as an EU Candidate Country. He reiterated Georgia's commitment to its European choice and expressed aspirations to initiate negotiations on EU accession.

Discussions also focused on regional security, with Kobakhidze affirming Georgia's role as a reliable partner contributing to peace and stability in the South Caucasus. Germany reiterated its unwavering support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Moreover, discussions touched upon Georgia's Draft Law on the Transparency of Foreign Influence, clarifying its aim to ensure annual financial reporting from NGOs.

Following the interface meeting, an extended meeting delved into various topics, including economy, law enforcement, arts and culture, education, and science, with an emphasis on further deepening bilateral cooperation.

Additionally, Kobakhidze met with Bärbel Bas, President of the German Bundestag, to discuss the positive momentum in bilateral relations and underscored Germany's support for Georgia's foreign policy priorities.

Later, Kobakhidze met with Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, emphasizing successful cooperation between the two countries and Germany's pivotal role in Georgia's institutional and socio-economic development. Discussions also revolved around European and Euro-Atlantic integration, with Kobakhidze expressing gratitude for Germany's support and highlighting the country's commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity.
