Georgian Politicians' Remarks on the Kavelashvili Letter Incident
Dimitri Khundadze, the former deputy of Georgian Dream, commented on US Ambassador Kelly Degnan's answer to Mikheil Kavelashvili, stating that her response was an insult to the Georgian people and contributed to deepening the country's polarisation. "I was expecting answers, but instead I received attacks against the elected deputy. In addition to showing disrespect to one deputy, this response offended the entire Georgian electorate", he said. "The questions posed by the representative were valid and authentic, as they pertain to the vast majority of society. As politicians, we are asked these questions, and we need to answer them in order to communicate with the public. A former member of the Georgian Dream pointed out that a diplomat's silence, lack of interest, or insults hurt the image of the country she represents. He also continued the open discussion by asking the ambassador whether the war rhetoric openly voiced by the Public Defender was acceptable for her as "the Public Defender claims that when the time comes, bombing is preferable to shame, and she calls Georgia's failure to join the new sanctions to its own detriment.
Strategy Aghmashenebeli Party also responded to the statements made by Georgian Dream in connection with the US Ambassador. According to the party's statement, the anti-American statements of Georgian Dream have reached an alarming point. "A clear proof of this is the direct attacks against our strategic partner, the US ambassador, Mrs. Kelly Degnan," the statement reads. "We call on Bidzina Ivanishvili and the leaders of Georgian Dream to come to their senses in time and stop the harmful actions against Georgia, the betrayal of the national interest of Georgia. We all know very well that Kavelashvili can not write a single paragraph of this statement on his own. We, the Strategy Aghmashenebeli, are appealing to the residents of Georgia once more to be extremely alert, as there is a very high possibility that Georgian Dream and Ivanishvili may cause Georgia and its citizens to lose this [European] opportunity," the message concluded.
Giga Bokeria, chairman of the European Georgia party, also responded to Irakli Kobakhidze's statement regarding Kelly Degnan: "Ivanishvili's regime and the Georgian Dream have been on the path of confrontation with the free world and alliance with Putinists for years. They have been encouraging Putinism, directly or indirectly, inside the country, but logically, this path leads to the worst and most open manifestation after a certain stage—now we are witnessing it." According to him, the Georgian government is at open war with the United States of America rather than protecting Georgia's independence.
"Georgia has a government that, instead of working to strengthen Georgia's security and protect our freedom, including, first and foremost, with the assistance of the most important country in this regard, the United States, instead of explaining to them the importance of Georgia, is in open war and confrontation with this delusional and malicious accusation, as if America wants to suffocate Georgia in blood, not Putin-but America," Bokeria said. "The straightforward response for those who cherish our freedom, security, and European and Western future is that these individuals, Ivanishvili and his entourage, are incompatible with our freedom, security, and European future." The leader of European Georgia concluded: "If we do not remove this dictatorship peacefully, we will have no hope of achieving peace and freedom at this historical juncture."
Earlier, the Chairman of Georgian Dream, Irakli Kobakhidze, said on July 8 that US Ambassador Kelly Degnan's response to MP Mikheil Kavelashvili's open letter "is, to put it lightly, insulting to the parliament and the state." Degnan’s response comes following Kavelashvili’s letter of rebuke to her and notes that the narrative of Georgia's involvement in the war is not heard from the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), but from people funded and supported by the US Embassy. Mikheil Kavelashvili's letter was published on the website of the Parliament of Georgia.
