Georgian President Addresses Democracy Issues in Georgia
Salome Zourabichvili, the President of Georgia, addressed several issues at the "Democracy Summit," organized by US Vice President Joe Biden on March 29. She reaffirmed Georgia's dedication to democracy and her desire to work with other nations to create a more democratic world.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Zourabichvili referred to as a war against democracy, freedom, and human decency, offered an unparalleled challenge. She emphasized the significance of robust democracies to defend against such threats, supported by unified civil society and global solidarity.
"The National Human Rights Strategy has been finalized, and the National Action Plan to end violence against women and adopt measures to strengthen women's economic empowerment has been adopted. This means that Georgia has succeeded in advancing two key priorities despite its tense geopolitical environment and internal tensions. An inclusive approach to advance judicial reform is one of our stated goals, but it has not really taken off yet," the President remarked.
Zourabichvili also praised the Georgian people for their dedication to democracy and their success in resisting attempts to impose restrictions on the rights of civil society through demonstrations, which resulted in the Law on Foreign Agents being retracted and a triumph for democracy. She urged for inter-ethnic harmony and expressed Georgia's resolve to strengthen its democracy and collaborate with international allies to create a more democratic, peaceful, and resilient world.
