At a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on June 9, German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany still supports Georgia's course towards the European Union. He called on the Georgian government to take steps toward the necessary reforms. According to the information, the topic of the meeting was the deepening of multilateral cooperation between Germany and Georgia, topical issues of security and European politics, and the global consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine.

"It was noted that the recommendations of the European Commission are a guideline on the way to the status of a candidate for EU membership. The Chancellor called on the Government of Georgia to make every effort in the coming weeks to implement the necessary measures promptly and actively, based on the recommendations mentioned. Speaking about the security policy, the Federal Chancellor stressed that Germany always supports Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders. The Federal Chancellor and the Prime Minister of Georgia agreed that in the future they will maintain an open and result-oriented dialogue and continue close communication," the statement added.

The administration of the government of Georgia, in turn, reported that at the meeting, Irakli Garibashvili informed Olaf Scholz about the steps taken by Georgia on the path of European integration, about the reforms carried out and significant progress in terms of implementing the 12 recommendations of the European Commission. "The Prime Minister also spoke about the importance of granting Georgia the status of an EU member state and noted that Georgia is waiting for the status of a candidate at the end of the year. At the meeting, the Prime Minister also noted that both political and practical support of member countries is now critically important for Georgia for the next stage of the country's accession to the EU," the Georgian side said.
