Irakli Kobakhidze on Negative Migration in Georgia
In a post on Facebook on February 20, Irakli Kobakhidze, the leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party, brought up the country's rising emigration rate. He claimed, "If it were not for the visa-free travel regime with the European Union, it can be said with certainty that in 2018-21 Georgia would not have a negative, but a positive migration balance."
Kobakhidze said: "When a nation with a strong economy eases the visa requirements for the citizens of a country with a poorer economy, this fact inevitably leads to the outflow of population. He continued by stating that between 2018 and 2021, 29,000 fewer persons were entering the nation than leaving as a result of the commencement of the visa-free travel system with the European Union. He used the strict US visa regulations for Georgian people as a counterargument, noting that in 2021, the US only issued US visas to 37% of the applicants. The leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party said that naturally, the balance of migration would worsen were the US to soften the visa regime since the strict visa policy effectively restricts the migration of Georgians from Georgia to the US, which has its own beneficial effect.
The chairman of Georgian Dream stated that those interested in improving the country's demographic trends should not be speculating but proposing proper business suggestions. He added that Georgia's demographic situation and trends deserve serious attention.
