Iran Confirms Date for 3+3 Regional Meeting, Reiterates Opposition to 'Zangezur Corridor'
Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, announced that the date for the next meeting of the 3+3 regional cooperation platform has been decided. He shared this information in response to a question from Sputnik Armenia.
“There is a clear timeframe, it will be announced through diplomatic channels,” Sobhani noted.
According to recent announcements, the next meeting of the 3+3 regional cooperation platform will take place in Turkey and will be held at the level of foreign ministers. This platform, involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, and Turkey, first convened in December 2021 with participation from deputy foreign ministers, though Georgia declined to attend.
The second meeting, held in October 2023 in Tehran, brought together foreign ministers from the participating countries. Once again, Georgia opted not to attend. The upcoming meeting in Turkey is expected to continue discussions on regional cooperation and challenges.
Mehdi Sobhani also firmly stated that the aspirations for the so-called “Zangezur corridor" will never materialize. Speaking to reporters, Sobhani emphasized Iran's clear stance on unblocking regional communications, highlighting that while Iran supports unblocking efforts, all actions must respect national and state sovereignty. Sobhani also addressed the issue of third-country oversight of Armenia’s motorways, noting that the Armenian government has already made its position on this matter very clear.
“Complete overseeing should be in the hands of Armenia’s government and within the framework of Armenia’s sovereignty. This is not the 19th century, we live in the 21st century. Countries have independence and sovereignty and enjoy that right,” the Iranian diplomat added.
