Iranian Ambassador Urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to Respect Borders and Reduce Tensions

Speaking at a press conference on April 16, Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, underscored the importance of respecting internationally recognized borders as well as upholding the principles of international law to foster stability and peaceful relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We are dissatisfied with the possible increase in tension in the region. The increase in tension harms the peoples of the region, as well as the neighbors of Armenia and Azerbaijan. We call on both sides to maintain calm, we call on them to show restraint and continue the dialogue on peace,” the Iranian diplomat noted.

He additionally highlighted that Iran views the security of its neighbors as integral to its security.

Mehdi Sobhani also addressed the issue of “extra-regional forces,” referring to countries from distant regions that may not directly bear the consequences of their decisions. Sobhani emphasized that these external actors, particularly certain European countries and the United States, often attempt to exert influence and make decisions on behalf of the people in the South Caucasus region.

Highlighting the distinction between regional and non-regional countries, Sobhani identified Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, and Turkey as the regional stakeholders in the South Caucasus. He pointed out that Russia's geographic proximity to the region distinguishes it as a regional actor, unlike the non-regional countries intervening from afar.

The ambassador reaffirmed Iran’s stance against changing internationally recognized borders and the importance of respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that Iran remains firmly opposed to any attempts to alter established geopolitical boundaries.

“We are categorically against any geopolitical change and the change of internationally recognized borders. If there are border issues, they should be resolved through dialogue based on shared perceptions, as well as respecting the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries. We are in favor of the peaceful way of recognizing the internationally recognized borders,” said the Iranian envoy to Armenia.

Mehdi Sobhani also revealed plans for upcoming visits by high-ranking Iranian officials to Armenia. He announced that the head of the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran is scheduled to visit Armenia soon, expressing optimism that this visit will lead to agreements to enhance trade relations between the two countries. Additionally, Sobhani informed reporters about the forthcoming visit to Armenia by the head of the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran. He discussed the possibility of Armenian officials visiting the Chabahar Port in Iran. Armenia has expressed interest in establishing a center at Chabahar Port, facilitating trade between Armenia, Iran, India, and other southern regions.
