Iranian Foreign Ministry: Azerbaijan Assures No Military Attack on Armenia
During a briefing for journalists on September 11, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that officials in Baku assured Tehran that they have no intention of carrying out a military attack on Armenia.
"We are in contact with the authorities of both Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the Armenian authorities have expressed concern about the possibility of a new military conflict on the part of Azerbaijan," the Iranian diplomat informed. According to him, Azerbaijani authorities have informed the Islamic Republic that they have no intention of carrying out a military attack and that the recent movements of military equipment are a routine event ahead of the start of the winter season, as movement in mountainous areas becomes increasingly difficult.
"Iran regards the security of its common borders with its northern neighbors as critically important for itself and continues to closely monitor developments in the Caucasus," the Iranian Foreign Ministry indicated. "Karabakh is part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the rights and security of the residents of this region must be ensured within specific frameworks, and this is our official position. Iran has always emphasized the need to respect the territorial integrity of countries and has always opposed any change in international borders," Kanaani emphasized, adding that mutual recognition of territorial integrity by Armenia and Azerbaijan would be an important step to achieving lasting peace and security in the region.
