Iranian Official Proposes Striking Israeli Missions in Azerbaijan as Retaliation

On April 1, an air attack was carried out on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, the capital of Syria. As a result, two generals of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, as well as five officers accompanying them, are said to have been killed.

Syrian and Iranian media reported that this happened as a result of an Israeli airstrike and also assessed this act as an extension of the conflict against Iran and its allies in the Middle East. The governments of Iran and Syria condemned the attack, which destroyed a building near the Iranian embassy. Saying that the attack was a 'significant threat to regional peace and security,' the Iranian mission called on the UN Security Council to condemn the attack and said that Tehran reserves the right to 'react decisively.'

Lebanon's Hezbollah group, which is seen as Iran's strongest armed representative in the region, has vowed to take revenge. "This crime will not go unpunished and retaliated by the enemy," Hezbollah said in a statement.

On the same day, following Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, threats against Tel Aviv emerged, with Azerbaijan's involvement suggested by Jalal Rashidi Kuchi, a member of the Iranian parliament. Kuchi proposed retaliating by targeting Israel's diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan.

Kuchi expressed dissatisfaction with what he perceived as Iran's hesitancy and patience in responding decisively to the attack on Iranian soil, which he considered a blow to Iran's honor. He suggested directing retaliation towards Israel's diplomatic centers, particularly singling out its representative office in Azerbaijan as a potential target.
