On December 12, Mikheil Saakashvili, the imprisoned former president of Georgia, wrote a letter asking for help from French President Emmanuel Macron.

"I am dying; I do not have much time. Toxicologists have concluded that I was poisoned in prison," Le Monde wrote in an article titled "Murderers!" after quoting Saakashvili's letter. "The killers! Former Georgian President Saakashvili was poisoned with mercury and arsenic," the publication stated.

The former president of Georgia asked to mobilize international support for him, citing that he is a personal prisoner of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Putin considers me one of his main enemies. He publicly promised to kill me. Now I am in prison as one of his prisoners," Saakashvili added.

As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, on December 8, in a statement addressing the deteriorating health of imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili, Peter Stano, the Lead Spokesperson for the EU's Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that Georgian authorities are responsible for his health and well-being and have a duty to take all necessary measures for him to receive appropriate medical care.
