Moscow Counters Calls for Troop Withdrawal, Affirms Base Key to Armenia's Sovereignty
On March 29, the Russian Foreign Ministry, in response to the report "Deepening EU-Armenia relations: more Europe in Armenia, more Armenia in Europe" prepared by the "Friends of Armenia Network" organization led by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, emphasized the crucial role of the 102nd Russian military base (RMB) in Armenia as the sole guarantee of the republic's sovereignty. The ministry dismissed the security proposals contained within the report as lacking in common sense, highlighting the indispensable nature of the Russian military presence for Armenia's sovereignty.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, any suggestion that the withdrawal of the 102nd RMB and Russian border guards would strengthen Armenia's military capacity amounts to dangerous demagogy. Furthermore, the ministry criticized the West for compelling Armenia to reconsider its security arrangements without offering any concrete alternative.
The Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted the report's primary objective: to drive a wedge between Yerevan's ties with Moscow and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The ministry noted that the report's authors predominantly espouse a mindset of "confrontation and containment of Russia," having invested significant efforts in fostering geopolitical tensions in Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry underscored a discernible bias in the report, pointing out the absence of consideration for Armenia's interests amidst the multi-page arguments and proposals. It criticized the European Union's enlargement policy, characterizing it as a geopolitical tool wielded by current EU leaders, emphasizing a lack of acknowledgment of Armenia's concerns within the report's discourse.
