Moscow Dismisses Insider Report on Alleged Russian Intelligence Operation in Armenia
On May 21, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that a report published by The Insider alleging the deployment of officers from Russia’s FSB, GRU, and SVR to Armenia in order to undermine Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was a fabrication.
The Foreign Ministry described the publication as false and politically motivated, stating that "the arguments presented in this ‘investigation’ are nothing more than blatant lies and a calculated provocation aimed at exerting psychological pressure on Russian diplomats and intimidating the Armenian public ahead of the elections." The agency further emphasized that the claims contained in the report were not supported by credible evidence and included factual inaccuracies, adding that "The Insider has failed to produce a single even remotely convincing fact to substantiate these accusations."
The ministry also addressed allegations concerning the activities of the Russian House in Yerevan, stating that its work in Armenia—covering humanitarian, cultural, and educational initiatives as well as the promotion of soft power—was fully consistent with the mandate of Russian Houses operating abroad.
Rejecting accusations of interference in Armenia’s internal affairs, the Foreign Ministry stated that Russian diplomatic activity in the country is carried out in strict accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It further characterized the report as part of a broader effort to undermine Russia’s position in the region, stating that "We view this latest ‘sensation’ regarding ‘Russian agents in Yerevan’ as yet another episode in the ongoing campaign to push Russia out of the South Caucasus," the ministry declared.
