NATO Refutes Rumors About Armenia's Acceptance to Alliance
Commenting on cooperation with Armenia on September 13, a representative of the North Atlantic Alliance said that NATO partners should determine the level of cooperation with the military bloc themselves.
"NATO is not currently considering the possibility of expanding the organization at the expense of Armenia, and Yerevan itself has not applied to join the bloc," the official added. "There has been no official request from Armenia to join the alliance. This is not a problem from our point of view, given our long-standing cooperation with other partner countries that do not seek to join the military bloc," the NATO official noted.
NATO also distanced itself from a recent statement by Günther Fehlinger, the head of the alliance's European Committee on Enlargement, who urged the authorities of Armenia to join the bloc. "Mr. Fehlinger officially has nothing to do with NATO. He is not a NATO employee; his views and opinions are his own and do not reflect the views of the alliance. And the European Committee for NATO Enlargement, despite the name, is not a committee or body of the alliance," he explained.
