New Strategic Road Bridge Laid in Zangilan Connecting Azerbaijan and Iran

On October 6, the foundation of a road bridge between Azerbaijan and Iran was laid in Zangilan. Shahin Mustafayev, the Deputy Prime Minister and Co-Chairman of the State Commission on Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran, and Mehrdad Bazrpash, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran and Co-Chairman of the Commission from the Iranian side, participated in the event.

According to the information, the construction of a road bridge and border-customs infrastructure within the framework of the "Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the establishment of new communication links between the Eastern Zangezur Economic Region of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan through the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the ground-breaking ceremony of the projects of embankment measures was held in the area and construction works were started.

The co-chairs specifically noted that the indicators of the road bridge and border-customs infrastructure will serve to increase the transit cargo transportation through the territory of the countries and facilitate travel to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Thus, the number of freight vehicles that can be received daily by the departure point from the state border, which will have seven traffic lines, as well as the car bridge, will be at least 1100 units.

Meeting Between Ilham Aliyev and Mehrdad Bazrpash

On October 6, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, received Mehrdad Bazrpash, the Press Office of the Azerbaijani President reported.

The head of state stressed the importance of the groundbreaking ceremony for constructing a bridge and border and customs infrastructure, as well as shore fortification projects near the Aghband settlement of the Zangilan district. It said that this would contribute to the further strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries. President Ilham Aliyev underlined the construction of roads and railways connecting the two countries was of great importance for the region and would serve stability and cooperation for the entire region. The head of state also noted the significance of the work carried out towards the development of the North-South transport corridor and further expansion of its capacity. President Ilham Aliyev also emphasized the importance of addressing regional issues with the participation of countries of the region, noted that Azerbaijan had initiated cooperation in a 3+3 format, and described the fact that meetings would soon be held in this format as a positive step.

The minister conveyed his congratulations on the occasion of the reintegration of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and described it as a significant event. He noted that after 30 years, the rights and fair position of Azerbaijan had fortunately been restored, as was the country's sovereignty. Mehrdad Bazrpash said that countries and peoples of the region had deep historical and cultural ties, adding that peace in the South Caucasus would create great prospects for the region.
