Nikol Pashinyan Announces Meeting with Aliyev, Talks About Absence of Armenian Forces in Karabakh, Defends France
During a meeting of the Armenian Cabinet on July 6, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed the planned meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Brussels, which, according to him, should take place soon.
"Shortly, I am scheduled to meet with the President of Azerbaijan in Brussels through the mediation of the President of the European Council," Pashinyan said. Noting that the text of the peace treaty with Azerbaijan is not ready for signing at the current stage, the prime minister at the same time expressed hope that positive progress will be recorded in the process of normalizing relations between Yerevan and Baku.
Moreover, he stated that Azerbaijan still demands the "Zangezur corridor" through the territory of Armenia and does not take any steps to open transport communications in the region.
According to him, Baku continues to accuse Yerevan of failing to fulfill its obligations to unblock transport links through its territory, citing an unclear corridor rationale. "Armenia has not taken on such obligations either in writing or orally and will never accept such interpretations of the tripartite statement of the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan dated November 9, 2020," Pashinyan said.
The prime minister further recalled that Armenia has repeatedly stated its readiness to restore transport communications based on the sovereignty of the countries through which they pass. "For a long time, a draft resolution of the republic's government on opening three checkpoints on the border with Azerbaijan has been put into official circulation. This resolution, however, has not yet been adopted due to the destructive behavior of Baku, which has not even begun such a process since it has not yet abandoned the 30-year policy of blockade of Armenia," Pashinyan said.
Furthermore, Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia has no armed forces on the [de-facto] territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
"Unfounded accusations against Armenia by Azerbaijan do not stop. In particular, Azerbaijan continues to demand the withdrawal of Armenian units from Nagorno-Karabakh, even though Armenia has no servicemen in Nagorno-Karabakh," the Prime Minister stressed at the government session. According to him, only the Defense Army of Nagorno-Karabakh is operating there. "The only reason for its operation is the daily Azerbaijani belligerent rhetoric, threats, and actions, the hidden essence of which is the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh," he said.
Also, Pashinyan said that Azerbaijan has launched an all-out propaganda campaign against France. "The reason is France’s clear position on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh," the prime minister said. He called Baku's propaganda campaign against countries and organizations that objectively assess the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh part of Baku's policy of ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh.
"For several months, Azerbaijan has been waging a large-scale propaganda campaign against France for voicing targeted assessments of the illegal actions of Baku at the official and public level. Azerbaijan's anti-French propaganda has only one goal - to prevent targeted assessments of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia, in turn, thanks France. However, it should take additional measures to ensure that more countries and organizations join this kind of assessment," Pashinyan said.
