Nikol Pashinyan: "Armenia Will Diversify Its Relations in Security Sector"
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on October 25, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said, "We have a bilateral agreement with Russia in the field of security, and the actions described in that agreement [CSTO Charter] also did not take place, which also raised very serious questions among both the Government and the public. As for the relations with other partners, I will be more honest if I say that these situations, in fact, led us to a decision that we need to diversify our relations in the security sector. And we're trying to do that now."
Answering the question of whether Pashinyan was afraid that Moscow would remove him from power, Pashinyan noted: "Such an approach violates many rules - from non-interference in each other's internal affairs to the rules of diplomatic correctness."
Moreover, Pashinyan stressed that he remains optimistic about the signing of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan in the coming months. "The region's future should result in the opening of borders and trade routes that have been closed for a long time. Respecting the sovereignty of Armenia, the roads connecting Turkey and Azerbaijan are also included here. Security is not only about armies but also about what should be achieved with the help of regional peace," he said.
