Nikol Pashinyan Comments on Peace Process with Azerbaijan and Humanitarian Situation in Karabakh; Azerbaijan Responds

At the government meeting on August 3, Armenian Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan expressed his country's commitment to the agreement on the establishment of peace with Azerbaijan based on the recognition of each other's territorial integrity and said that he expects Azerbaijan to confirm this agreement openly.

According to Pashinyan, despite all the difficulties, there is a real chance to establish long-term, stable, and sustainable peace. Pashinyan called on Azerbaijan to refrain from taking steps aimed at reducing this chance, including the continuous obstruction of the Baku-Stepanakert [Khankendi in Azebaijani] dialogue within the framework of the international mechanism, the illegal closing of the Lachin corridor, and the abduction of Karabakh resident Vagif Khachatryan.

Pashinyan said that the release of Khachatryan and other prisoners would be an indicator of commitment to the peace agenda. He also urged Azerbaijan not to keep the 360-ton humanitarian cargo sent to Karabakh in the Lachin corridor.

On the same day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan released a comment on Pashinyan's recent comments. The ministry stated that Pashinyan is trying to mislead the international community regarding the operation of the Lachin border crossing point, as well as territorial integrity and delimitation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Pashinyan lists the documents considered as the basis for the delimitation of the borders; at the same time, he continues his territorial claims against Azerbaijan and promotes the so-called regime, thereby revealing that his country is not committed to the territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as the delimitation process.
