At a press conference in Yerevan on February 13, Hovhannes Aleksanyan, the head of the Strategy Development Department of the Office of the Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs under the Government of Armenia, said that the number of repatriates in Armenia is steadily growing.

"The office for repatriation of the Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs received more than ten thousand requests in 2022. In addition, over 25,000 Armenians applied for Armenian citizenship last year. For comparison, during the previous three years (2018–2021), this figure was 40 thousand people. This is the best result since 1991. An unprecedented figure," the official stressed. "States with rich experience in repatriation always use crisis situations in other countries to attract compatriots to their homeland. As a result, it appears natural that, as a result of the situation in Ukraine, our compatriots living both in this country and in Russia came to Armenia," Aleksanyan added.

"Parallel to the immigration flow to Armenia from the north, the influx of Armenians from Syria and Lebanon continues, where difficult socio-economic conditions have been growing in recent years," the official emphasized. "In the previous 3-4 years, our compatriots from 40-45 countries of the world applied for Armenian citizenship. Most of these people return to their homeland for permanent residence," a representative from the government agency said.

According to him, Russia currently occupies the first place in terms of the number of repatriates to Armenia, and the indicated other countries of the Middle East are in second place.
