Paruyr Hovhannisyan Discusses Armenia's Foreign Policy, Border Cooperation, and US Migration Impact

| News, Politics, Armenia

On January 24, during a session of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on European Integration in the National Assembly, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan stated that a balanced policy remains Armenia's main direction, emphasizing that all initiatives aim to realize national interests and create favorable conditions.

Regarding the potential impact of US migration policies, Hovhannisyan noted that it is too early to assess the consequences, mentioning that even Mexico is still evaluating the implications. He suggested that such developments might influence Armenian migration flows but require further study.

When asked about Russia’s reaction to Armenia's EU accession process and potential interference with its Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) membership, Hovhannisyan cited Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who described recent discussions as constructive and held in a healthy working atmosphere.

Addressing cooperation with the US on border security, Hovhannisyan stated that the Armenian-American strategic partnership involves improving border control effectiveness. While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced plans to send a group to Armenia for this purpose, Hovhannisyan clarified that the initiative does not target any specific country, including Iran. He noted that recent discussions with Iranian partners, including a visit by Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan to Tehran, confirmed high-level relations between the two countries, with no unresolved issues.

Hovhannisyan also highlighted the strengthening of Armenia’s border capacity, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in border control. He suggested that, in the future, Russian border guards might withdraw from the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian borders. He concluded by emphasizing the need to enhance Armenia’s capabilities through the exchange of relevant experience.
