Pashinyan Addresses Geopolitical Challenges and Election Agenda
During a meeting with residents of the border region of Tavush in northern Armenia on April 17, Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, addressed the challenges his government faces, attributing them to global geopolitical shifts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war.
Notably, he underscored that these changes had not transpired in 2021, the year of his election as prime minister. Touching upon discussions regarding early parliamentary elections, Pashinyan conveyed the potential repercussions of holding such elections amidst ongoing global conflicts. He remarked, "Let's say we can hold elections next month... The war between Russia and Ukraine started after our last election." He emphasized the government's role in adapting citizens to evolving circumstances.
Pashinyan reiterated his government's commitment to the election agenda. He expressed a desire to negotiate border demarcation with Azerbaijan to safeguard Armenia's sovereignty. He highlighted his personal sacrifices for Armenia's independence, "The next election will be held in 2026... I sacrifice myself for the sake of the Republic of Armenia."
Underscoring the nation's interests over personal ambitions, Pashinyan emphasized, "Armenia is more important to me than my political career." He envisioned a peaceful border with Azerbaijan, advocating for diplomacy over conflict.
Regarding territorial adjustments, Pashinyan emphasized the constitutional requirement of a referendum for any changes to Armenia's sovereign territory. He asserted, "Even if we want to, we cannot give away our sovereign territory." However, he clarified that the four villages slated for transfer to Azerbaijan had never been part of Armenia.
