Pashinyan Addresses Key Issues: Minsk Group, Border Sovereignty, Peace Talks, and Economic Growth

On March 26, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that, starting from March 1, 2025, all Armenian checkpoints would be under the control of the country’s border troops, marking a significant step in Armenia’s sovereignty.
He expressed gratitude to the Border Troops of the Russian Federal Security Service for managing these checkpoints since Armenia's independence, stating that Armenia is now capable of performing this function independently.
Pashinyan also commented on the opening of the Margara checkpoint on the Armenian-Turkish border for the passage of humanitarian aid to Syria, clarifying that while it is an important development, it is not unprecedented, as the checkpoint was also opened for humanitarian aid to Turkey after the recent earthquake.
Discussing the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship, Pashinyan explained that Armenia is postponing the decision until it is certain that Azerbaijan will not engage in new initiatives—such as the Western Azerbaijan initiative—that could shift the conflict from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. He emphasized that Armenia's strategy remains focused on peace and that any changes to Azerbaijan’s Constitution are not a priority, as the peace agreement already addresses these concerns.
On the issue of disinformation spread by Azerbaijan regarding Armenian gunfire along the border, Pashinyan assured that Armenia is seriously investigating the situation, emphasizing that both sides have declared they do not want to escalate tensions. He noted that consultations with Azerbaijan regarding the peace treaty are ongoing and that any progress will be publicly announced once results are achieved.
Pashinyan further highlighted the importance of tax revenue in increasing social expenditures, stating that without proper documentation of economic activities—including gold sales—Armenia cannot raise pensions. He also expressed support for the cashback program for pension funds and outlined the need to ensure that citizens have access to education and opportunities for a better standard of living.
Finally, responding to a question about his potential resignation, Pashinyan reiterated that a government cannot remain in power if the people no longer support it, referencing the peaceful Velvet Revolution of 2018. He also addressed accusations from opposition forces regarding his actions during the 2023 Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, stating that these accusations were unfounded.
