Pashinyan, Aliyev Hold Record-Long Meeting to Outline Peace, Regional Connectivity
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan shared details about his recent meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the BRICS summit in Russia, expressing satisfaction with the discussion, which he noted was their longest yet. Speaking in parliament, Pashinyan highlighted a significant development from the meeting: both Armenia and Azerbaijan discussed not only the need for a peace treaty and other agreements for peaceful coexistence but also considered the importance of a long-term strategic agreement.
Pashinyan emphasized the idea of a “strategic deal” that would outline the framework for Armenia and Azerbaijan to coexist as independent states for generations to come, which he described as a fundamental issue.
"By and large, I can say that we have perceptions about that strategic deal. Our perception of the strategic deal is based on the concept of Real Armenia. And I find this conversation to be very important, although this conversation should have political manifestations," Pashinyan said.
Nikol Pashinyan also announced that Armenia has submitted its proposals on the final two articles of the draft peace treaty to Azerbaijan. Speaking in parliament on November 13, Pashinyan said, “On Monday, we conveyed to Azerbaijan our proposals about the remaining two articles of the peace treaty.” This follows Azerbaijan’s submission of its proposals on November 5.
Additionally, Pashinyan noted potential progress on reopening regional connections between the two countries. Reflecting on his recent meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Kazan, Russia, Pashinyan explained, “It seems likely that we could reach a mutually acceptable solution for opening regional connections.” He mentioned that Armenia formally communicated this proposal to Azerbaijan in writing.
