Pashinyan: Armenia Seeks Guarantees from Azerbaijan Against Hidden Territorial Claims in Peace Process
In the peace process, Armenia expects guarantees from Azerbaijan that there are no hidden territorial claims, and in return, Armenia is prepared to provide the same guarantee to Azerbaijan reciprocally, stated Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the session of the initiative group of the Civil Contract Party.
"We have reached a point where we want additional guarantees to ensure that we, from Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan, from us, do not harbor territorial claims and hidden ambitions. Diplomatic texts always have different twists, subtexts, and footnotes. In the footnotes of Azerbaijan's proposals, and perhaps Azerbaijan in ours, observe the dangers of territorial claims, if not today, then in the future," Pashinyan said.
Pashinyan is optimistic that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan is theoretically possible. He indicated that recent discussions have suggested a mutual understanding that both countries do not have territorial demands on each other and commit not to make such demands in the future.
In detailing the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, the Armenian PM mentioned that there have been various episodes of both mediated and direct contact during this period. He emphasized that direct contacts between Armenia and Azerbaijan are currently more active.
