Pashinyan Criticizes Russia's Inaction in South Caucasus

In an interview with a journalist of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on September 2, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Russian peacekeepers are not fulfilling the mission entrusted to them by the trilateral declaration.

Asked what prevents Russia from intervening to comply with the November 9, 2020 statement, by which Russia was supposed to control traffic through the Lachin corridor, Pashinyan said: "I cannot assess this matter, except to agree with the wording that, in fact, yes, it turns out that the peacekeeping forces of the Russian Federation are not fulfilling the mission assigned by the trilateral declaration. And this is a cause for serious concern. In fact, one of the main objectives of the presence of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh is the security of civil society and the civilian population. In this case, security is not ensured, including the right to free movement, and this is a really alarming fact."

The Armenian Prime Minister noted: "Russia is distancing itself from the region because of its actions or inaction in the South Caucasus. We see that Russia is distancing itself from the region by steps taken or not taken on its part. We don't know for what reasons [this is happening]. There are, of course, assumptions. But some processes lead to the realization that one day we may wake up and see that Russia is no longer here."

He emphasized that Russian peacekeepers should have controlled the Lachin corridor linking Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh. "But it is not under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Why? There could be two reasons - either Russia can't control the Lachin corridor or doesn't want to. Both reasons are problematic," the Armenian prime minister noted.
