Pashinyan Meets Canadian and Belgian Prime Ministers at Francophonie Summit

During the 19th Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan held a meeting with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, according to a report from the Armenian PM press service.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau expressed his pleasure in meeting with Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, noting that the meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the strengthening bilateral relations, the growing people-to-people ties, and the strong Armenian community in Canada. Trudeau also emphasized the significance of the recent opening of the Canadian embassy in Armenia, which he said would pave the way for expanded cooperation between the two countries.

Nikol Pashinyan stressed the importance of Canada’s decision to open an embassy in Yerevan, viewing it as a significant boost to developing relations between the two countries. He mentioned that the meeting offered a valuable chance to discuss important regional issues, including Armenia’s progress on its democratic agenda and its security and economic conditions. Pashinyan highlighted Canada’s support for Armenia’s democratic reforms and hoped this political backing would lead to stronger economic cooperation between the two nations.

The discussion then referred to recent developments in the South Caucasus, including the ongoing talks surrounding the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty and the potential for reopening regional communication routes. In this context, Nikol Pashinyan introduced Armenia’s “Crossroads of Peace” initiative, stressing the country’s readiness for unblocking these routes, provided it is aligned with the principles of sovereignty, jurisdiction, equality, and reciprocity.

Canadian PM expressed support for the “Crossroads of Peace” project and underscored the importance of taking consistent steps to promote peace and stability in the region.

Belgian PM Praises Armenia's Peace Efforts During Meeting with Pashinyan

In the framework of the Francophonie SummitArmenian PM Nikol Pashinyan also met with Belgian PM Alexander De Croo to discuss further developing and expanding Armenia-Belgium cooperation.

The two leaders exchanged views on the current security situation in the South Caucasus region. Pashinyan addressed the discussions surrounding the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty and recent developments, labeling Azerbaijan’s aggressive rhetoric as unacceptable. He reaffirmed the Armenian government’s commitment to the peace agenda.

Belgian PM De Croo welcomed the steps taken by the Armenian government to ensure peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the importance of these initiatives. The leaders also discussed Armenia’s “Crossroads of Peace” project and its principles aimed at unblocking regional communication channels. Additionally, Pashinyan and De Croo deliberated on enhancing Armenia-European Union cooperation, with the Belgian PM expressing his government’s readiness to support this process.
