Pro-Palestinian Group Attacks SOCAR Office in Istanbul

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On May 31, the Istanbul office of the SOCAR company, which transports oil from Azerbaijan to Israel through the territory of Turkey, was attacked by protesters. A group called "A thousand youth for Palestine" threw red paint on the walls of the oil company's office. In the videos taken at the scene, it can be seen that a group of people tried to break the entrance doors of the office. The activists chanted slogans such as "We continue to raise our voices in intifada in front of SOCAR, which supplies oil to genocidal Israel!" "We will not allow this bloody trade." The pro-Palestinian group also noted this event on its social media account: "While murderous Israel is committing genocide in Palestine, Turkey and Azerbaijan are carrying millions of barrels of oil for this genocide." The video also showed a group of people wearing traditional Palestinian scarves around their necks trying to enter the company's building but being stopped by security guards.

SOCAR Türkiye denied accusations of supplying crude oil to Israel. "Against the background of recent geopolitical changes in the region, SOCAR Türkiye and group companies have been attacked by some provocateurs both through social media and physically. These groups are posting provocative publications on social media, making unfounded accusations that we are selling crude oil to Israel. At the same time, they are attacking the company's office, jeopardizing the safety of our employees," the statement said. "We declare that the accusations about SOCAR Türkiye selling crude oil to Israel are not true. We carry out all our activities within the framework of international business contracts and in accordance with the vision of our parent company, SOCAR," the Turkish subsidiary of the Azerbaijani state oil company pointed out. The statement also noted that crude oil is realized through trading or trading companies: “The supplying companies cannot control and interfere in which countries the oil is further transported to and for what purposes it is used. SOCAR, like other oil companies, operates within the framework of trade relations with the relevant companies.”
