Russia Responds to Pashinyan's Recent Claims About Kremlin's Role in Karabakh

Commenting on Nikol Pashinyan's statement that Russia is the guarantor of the security of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Armenia is trying to lay responsibility for the fate of Nagorno-Karabakh on third countries.

According to Zakharova, all the obligations of the Russian side are enshrined in the tripartite statement of the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, dated November 9, 2020. "It is enough to look at the document and understand what obligations are and are not," she added. "Russian peacekeepers are doing everything in their power to prevent escalation and stabilize the situation on earth. They do it in their area of responsibility. Of course, much also depends on the actions and statements of all parties involved. We believe that these statements should be constructive and aimed at common success," the Foreign Ministry noted.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, painstaking efforts and titanic work aimed at the implementation of all agreements are often behind the statements of the Russian Foreign Ministry. "We consider the statements of the Armenian leadership as a continuation of the line taken at the summit in Prague under the auspices of the European Union. Therefore, we leave on the conscience of the Armenian side, the leadership of Armenia attempts to make third countries responsible for the fate of Nagorno-Karabakh," the diplomat said.

When asked whether Russia should protect Nagorno-Karabakh if Azerbaijan tries to take control of the territories under the responsibility of the peacekeepers, Zakharova replied that she could only comment on what was happening. "Telling what it might look like if something happened is inappropriate, wrong, and very harmful in this case. Because it will lead to speculations, insinuations, etc. There will be something that requires a reaction, we will give it. It is extremely dangerous to engage in modeling," the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry summed up.
