Russian Ambassador Rebuts Armenian Speaker's Criticisms, Defends Peace Efforts

| News, Politics, Armenia

On March 30, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin addressed the recent developments, emphasizing Russia's efforts to halt the conflict and avert a looming catastrophe.

Kopyrkin labeled the assertions made by Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan as 'blatantly false.' "Detailed measures taken by Russia were pivotal in diffusing tensions and preventing further escalation," Kopyrkin underscored, citing the intervention of Russian border guards during critical moments, notably in Nerkin Khand. He also highlighted the establishment of border checkpoints along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, initiated at the request of Prime Minister Pashinyan and funded by Russia.

In response to Simonyan's accusations that Russia failed to fulfill its role as Armenia's 'big brother' during the conflict, Kopyrkin expressed dismay. "Allegations of Moscow's betrayal and deliberate provocation of war within Armenian territory are baseless," he stated.

"The propagation of such narratives in public discourse raises concerns regarding underlying motives," Kopyrkin remarked. He emphasized the significance of the Armenia-Russia relationship, particularly for many Armenian families. "When high-ranking officials adopt such rhetoric, it casts doubt on whose interests they serve," he concluded.
