Russian Deputy Prime Minister Supports Opening Transport Connections Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
In an interview with TASS agency on June 19, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said that the opening of transport connections in the region would begin with the restoration of the railway that will pass along the Yeraskh (Arazdeyan)-Julfa-Megri-Horadiz route.
"We held a meeting of the deputy prime ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia in the format of a tripartite working group. As a result, a complex document was drawn up. The document states that the opening of transport links in the region will begin with restoring the railway that will pass through the Yeraskh (Arazdeyan)-Julfa-Megri-Horadiz route. Out of respect for the parties' sovereignty, the document defines the basis of the approach to the procedure for crossing the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. None of the parties doubts that the individual parts of this road will be under the jurisdiction of the country where it is located. Thus, the legislation of Azerbaijan and Armenia related to this road will be applied," Overchuk added.
He said that there is no alternative to peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the best way to achieve peace is to create an opportunity for people to cooperate peacefully, to build a common road for people and goods to pass, normal life and trade will begin and old resentments will gradually fade into the background. "The biggest problem is trust. That is why the negotiations are progressing slowly. In the end, ordinary people - Azerbaijanis, Armenians, citizens of other countries - will leave the road. How will they behave with each other when crossing the border? How will their safety be ensured when crossing the territory of another state? Today that is the main question; we want to answer this question in such a way that we ensure that nothing bad happens to these people on the territory of the other country. And, of course, we are all affected by what is happening on the border right now. It would be easier to find a solution if there is a ceasefire," the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said.
According to him, the draft of the document has been prepared and almost agreed upon, although it is still necessary to work on the issue of how ordinary Azerbaijanis and ordinary Armenians will behave with each other during the normal border crossing. The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia answered the question about when the road will be opened: "So far, no one will give a definite answer to this question. When we reach an agreement and sign the relevant document. Then this iron, which existed in the Soviet era and was used by both Armenians and Azerbaijanis, we will talk about starting the restoration of the road."
