Salome Zourabichvili Condemns Georgian Government for Its Position on Russo-Ukrainian War
On February 24, the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili received ambassadors from several countries.
In her speech, President Zourabichvili lamented, "The Georgian administration has isolated itself, withdrawn itself from the democratic community, and is seeking to defend its pseudo-neutral and balanced approach." She emphasized Georgian citizens' apparent support for Ukraine, saying, "That is especially inexplicable from the nation that has gone through the same suffering many times and understands well what the violation of sovereignty and independence entails." She said that while serving as President of Georgia, she had conveyed Georgia's unwavering solidarity for Ukraine in all conceivable forums during the conflict in that country.
President Zourabichvili condemned the Georgian government for not being in Kyiv today [February 24]. She said that she would have been there had she been invited. "Yet, after receiving an invitation, the Parliament decided against sending a formal delegation. As a result, the opposition represents us in Kyiv; however, I am happy they are there," she remarked. "As opposed to far stronger European nations, Georgia does not have the resources to assist Ukraine, but the president said that because "our solidarity is primarily on a moral level, we should defend our ideals more fiercely," the official stated.
Moreover, President Zourabichvili stated that the Russian-instigated conflict has been going on for a year and has violated and disregarded all international humanitarian standards and agreements. "The continual bombardment, shelling, and devastation of towns, villages, people, whether military or civilians, are being endured with incredible bravery by the Ukrainian people," she stated.
"Russia has already been defeated; it did not succeed in toppling the government, nor did it succeed in wearing down public patience or eroding international backing; on the contrary, trust and support for the Ukrainian government and president is rising every day," the statement said. President Zourabichvili emphasized that Moscow had not anticipated the incredible solidarity of the democratic West. "It may be stated that this conflict produced a brand-new, robust, and self-assured Europe that had not yet been strategically constructed. The entire continent of Europe now recognizes the source of the threat, and Ukraine is now protecting everyone's freedom rather than just its own," she added. The President stated: "We are on one side, on the side of Ukraine."
