South Caucasus countries in global passport rankings 2020

| News, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia

On 7 July, both Arton Capital and Henley and Partners published their passport indexes for the year 2020. According to Arton Capital’s ranking, Armenia occupied the 46th place, Azerbaijan the 44th place, while Georgia 15th place. In Henley’s ranking, Armenia  occupied the 80th place, Azerbaijan 76th place and Georgia 53rd place.

In terms of methodology, the Arton Capital index uses data based on official information provided by governments, updated in real-time with intelligence obtained through crowdsourcing and enhanced with proprietary research from highly credible sources. To determine the individual rank of each passport, a three-tier method is applied: 1) Mobility Score (MS) – includes visa-free (VF), visa on arrival (VOA), eTA and eVisa (if issued within 3 days), 2) VF portion of their score vs VOA and 3) the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index 2018. As for Henley, their index uses data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and supplemented, enhanced and updated using extensive in-house research and open-source online data The total score of passports in the index is then determined through the number of destinations for which no visa is required.

In Arton Capital's index, Armenian citizens could travel to 20 countries visa free, 30 countries with visa on arrival and to 148 with a visa. Azerbaijani citizens could travel to 23 countries visa free, 30 with visa on arrival and 145 with a visa. Georgian citizens could travel in 57 countries visa free, 33 with visa on arrival and 108 with a visa. In Henley's index, the number of destinations where Armenian citizens could travel visa free was 63, Azerbaijani citizens could travel visa free in 67 countries and Georgian citizens could travel visa free in 116 countries.

Both indexes ranked Japan’s passports on the first place (in Arton Capital’s ranking the position was shared with New Zealand). From the neighbouring states to the Caucasus, Russia ranked 24th, Iran 61st and Turkey 22nd in Arton Capitals ranking, and 51st, 55th and 101st by Henley’s respectively.
