On July 31, Former Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Surat Huseynov died in a hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.
Huseynov's Assistant, Konul Rafiggizi, claimed that Surat Huseynov was gradually poisoned. Rafiqgizi said that Surat Huseynov decided to return to Azerbaijan and start a political activity: "His goal to return to politics was clear to everyone, and his interviews and statements starting in 2019 clearly revealed this."
Surat Huseynov was born in Ganja in 1959. Huseynov, the military unit's former commander (colonel), and his supporters disobeyed the Azerbaijani authorities in June 1993. Heydar Aliyev, the chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party, was declared the winner in the next presidential elections. However, a year later, the colonel was again accused of attempting a coup d'état. On October 6, 1994, Surat Huseynov was released from being a member of the Azerbaijani Parliament. On October 7, he was removed from the post of prime minister, and some of his supporters were arrested. On March 17, 2004, Surat Huseynov was released by the amnesty decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev.
