Toivo Klaar: "Georgia’s Role as Bridge between Armenia and Azerbaijan Is Very Important"

On February 7, Toivo Klaar, the Special Representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, emphasized the significance of Georgia's position as a bridge in regional ties between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In an interview with the Georgian Public Broadcaster, Klaar highlighted the importance of the three countries of the South Caucasus working together and said he hoped their cooperation with the EU would grow. "It is very important that the three countries of the South Caucasus can work together and promote peace. And here, Georgia’s role, acting like a bridge between Armenia and Azerbaijan, is undoubtedly very important", he added.

The EU official emphasized the significance of the 2022 meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Tbilisi, which took place against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities between the two nations over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. He also said that Tbilisi could still be used for high-level gatherings in various formats.

"It makes perfect sense that such close neighbors would work together on transportation, the environment, energy, and other issues. I think there is a lot of opportunity, both now and in the future," he said.
